We’ve all experienced those nights when, despite a reasonable ambient temperature, we wake up sweating, desperate for a little coolness. Why do we feel hot at night? There are many possible answers to this question, and they vary from person to person. Let’s explore the various reasons for this phenomenon and the solutions to remedy it!
One of the first things to check is obviously the temperature of your bedroom. Although several sources suggest a lower temperature, a study carried out by experts and published in Science of The Total Environment in 2023 reveals that the ideal temperature for good quality sleep would be between 20 and 25°C. Beyond this temperature, sleep quality suffers greatly. In fact, a room that’s too warm or poorly ventilated can disturb your body, which naturally needs to lower its temperature during the night. Using a fan, air conditioner or even a dehumidifier may be advisable to maintain a cool, pleasant atmosphere.
Your bedding plays a crucial role in regulating your body temperature during sleep. Many people underestimate the importance of choosing the right materials for their sheets, blankets and mattresses. We recommend investing in sheets, blankets, mattresses and pillows made from breathable materials. Modern technologies offer bedding solutions designed to dissipate heat and improve air circulation.
Sheets made from synthetic materials like polyester can retain heat and moisture, making you sweat more. In contrast, cotton and bamboo sheets are much more breathable and absorb moisture better. These materials are notably soft, durable and allow good air circulation.
Like sheets, duvets can contribute to your comfort at night. Feather, down or microgel duvets are ideal for maintaining a stable temperature without retaining too much heat. Avoid heavy blankets or blankets made of synthetic materials that can trap heat.
The choice of mattress is probably the most important. Memory foam mattresses, while comfortable, can retain heat. Fortunately, there are modern versions of this material, featuring cooling technologies such as integrated cool gels or graphite-infused materials that dissipate heat. Natural latex mattresses, an airy, eco-friendly and durable material, may well be the most beneficial option for avoiding night-time heat. Pocket coil mattresses, with their air circulation spaces, can also be a good option for those who tend to get hot at night. Cool-touch fabrics, such as those used in our Millésime or Ascension collections, can greatly help to reduce heat.
Pillows and mattress covers also play an important role in temperature regulation. Memory foam pillows can trap heat if they are not perforated or infused with a cooling material. For a foam pillow that’s still cool, we recommend our Millésime Velouté pillow. Feather or down pillows, or those made with breathable materials such as bamboo, gel or latex, allow better air circulation and stay cooler. Leak-proof mattress protectors are often made from materials that are not very breathable. Think instead of a cooling mattress cover, like our Cooltech model, for cool nights.
Avoid spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol before bedtime. Opt for a light meal in the evening and stay hydrated throughout the day to avoid dehydration, which can also contribute to body heat.
If night sweats persist and disrupt your sleep, it may be worth consulting a doctor. He or she will be able to check whether underlying medical conditions or medications may be to blame, and suggest appropriate solutions.
